Scams Targeting Job Seekers

October 20th, 2008

When looking for your next great job, unfortunately you need to be aware that there are people who are looking to take advantage of you. Although the story they tell will change, a scam falls into one of two basic categories: 1. An attempt to get you to pay money; 2. An attempt to steal your identity

How do they attempt to get you to pay money? Someone may pose as a recruiter stating he/she has a great employer with a high paying job, and all you need to do is pay a placement fee. Another variation of this tactic is to offer you “exclusive” job leads – leads that you can’t find elsewhere, and you can’t see until you pay a fee. Or there are “Work at Home” jobs where you are required to pay a fee for the initial packet of materials.

A good rule of thumb: NEVER pay for a job, or a lead to a job. Read the last sentence again, and let the word “never” sink into your head. No matter what the story is, or how convincing the person is, NEVER pay money. If you follow this rule of thumb, you will never get taken by this type of scam.

How do they attempt to steal your identity? You could receive a job offer, without ever meeting anyone face to face. Does this sound ridiculous? It should, but it won’t when they tell you their story – because they’ll make it sound real. The story changes every time, but usually is something like this: a major company outside of the US needs to transfer money into the US, or needs to deposit money from US sales, and will pay you a (a specified amount, or a percentage of the transaction) to put the money into your bank account. They will tell you this is a great job that pays great money, and you only have to work a few hours each week.

A good rule of thumb: NEVER give your credit card number(s), social security number, bank account number(s), or date of birth to any prospective employer without first meeting with the employer face to face. Resist the pressure to “act now” for a great opportunity that will have to go to someone else – let someone else get their identity stolen. If the employer does not have a local representative to meet with you in a face to face interview, you’ll only need to do a little research to find this great opportunity is nothing more than a scam.

Protect Yourself: When something sounds too good to be true you can research companies through the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org), the Federal Trade Commission (http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/consumer.shtm). You can find more detailed information on crimes committed via the internet and how to avoid them, from the US Government’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx).

Everyone at GadBall hopes that GadBall.com is a great professional resource for you, and that this information helps prevent you from falling victim to a scam.

Career Networking using Facebook and GadBall technologies

January 15th, 2008

The GadBall team is happy to announce the first release of Career Link, a unique Facebook application that helps you cultivate your Facebook network and build it into a professional community.

You’ve invested a significant amount of time building your network of friends on Facebook. Introduce your friends to your professional experience and goals. When your friends know what you do for work they can help you by introducing you to their friends; your friends may know people who can help you do your job better.

A Career Link professional profile gives you the opportunity to describe your job and employer. You can make your Career Link profile visible to your friends, and their friends – someone you know may be searching for a job similar to what you do, or you may know of a relevant opening at your company for a friend who is looking for a new job.

Career experts estimate that the vast majority of job openings are never advertised or publicly announced, but filled through networking. Career minded people devote time to cultivating relationships, and CareerLink helps you transform your Facebook friends into professional contacts.

Not familier with Facebook? – it’s a social networking website that connects people with friends and others. Career Link adds another layer of connections to Facebook by introducing an option to connect for career networking.

Home Screen
To add Career Link to your Facebook account or to create your Facebook account, simply follow this link or search for Career Link in the Facebook application directory.

After adding the application to your Facebook account, you’ll be redirected to your Career Link home page. The home page shows you relevant information regarding your account:

  • Invite your friends to view your Career Link profile and see who viewed it.
  • Up-to-date statistics on who viewed your profile
  • If your friends shared their profile with you, you’ll be notified about it here (and on your Facebook home page) and you’ll be able to view it.

Profile Page
It is easy to create and update your Career Link profile . You can upload a resume (or cut and paste a resume), or extract your data from your Facebook profile, and our technology will migrate your data to your Career Link profile. Or, you can manually input your data.

You can make your profile private and not searchable, which means that no one else will know that you have an active Career Link profile, or you can set your profile as “searchable” – meaning others outside of your current network can network with you.

Easily update your profile via the profile edit page. Click on the edit button next to each section you’d like to update.

Share and Distribute Profile Page
Easily share your profile with your friends or with other job boards. With one click you can specify which friends are allowed to see your profile and what job boards will receive it. If you’d like your profile removed from a job board, or not allow your friends to access it anymore, simply click the remove button. It’s that easy.

Share, connect, network, and find other professionals on Career Link

Welcome to GadBall Blog

September 24th, 2007

Welcome to GadBall Blog, a new blog from all of us here at GadBall.com.

As far as we know, GadBall is the only free resume distribution site on the internet. Using our automated distribution technology and our job board contacts, we built a site to take the pain out of looking for a job. Let’s face it, looking for a job is no fun – and it requires a lot of repetitive work. We feel you should only have to type your resume once, then have the ability to distribute it and manage it throughout all employment sites in cyberspace.

Does it sound good so far? We want GadBall to be more than a resume distribution site, we really want to help you get a great job. So, we give you a free GadBall email account – actually you get 2 email accounts (1 for personal use; 1 for your job search). All email responses to your GadBall distributed resume come back to your GadBall Career email account.

We’ve been doing this for a few years, now, and we help an average of 10,000 new job seekers every month.

Searching for a job is temporary for most people – helping people search for jobs is a career for us. With this blog we hope to provide a window into the chaotic world of searching for a job.

Please contact us with your thoughts on how we can improve.

Thanks for stopping by,
